Windlestone stocks around 20 varieties of conifers - from the dense, compact ground cover varieties to the upright statuesque mature species, to those that grow into magnificent tall giants with tiered branches. Colours vary from intense bright-green foliage with yellow tips to an intense dark green to the light blue-grey varieties. Most conifers are very hardy and grow in cool conditions - but need watering in hot or dry months.
Upright and ground cover conifers are ideal for start-up gardeners who are quite happy to leave these symmetrical tress to develop naturally. They grow well in full sun or part-shade with well drained soil.
Conifers can be grown in pots too. These trees look superb when planted in pairs - one on either side of a garden path or gate.
Conifers such as the fast-growing Leylandii species are very popular in Durham where, when planted as a hedge, provide an excellent windbreak. You can trim Leylandii to the required height and width you need - a yearly clipping or shaping would be required to maintain the perfect size - left untended, they can grow into enormous trees so be sure to think through to the years ahead in terms of what you want to achieve by adding some of these distinctive trees to your garden.
