If you're looking for stunning flowering plants or plants with impactful foliage - like the hosta shown - which live for more than two years, then it's perennials you're after. Think dianthus, geraniums, fuchsias and dahlias - which are very popular flowering perennials.
Although they will flower and produce foliage from the outset, they generally take a few years to really come into their own and then - with a little care - deliver consistent shows of beautiful flowers and/or foliage to delight you, year after year. They are the easiest of plants for beginners who will enjoy seeing them develop and grow in their gardens.
If there was a simple explanation of garden plants to add to a great garden, it would be: Trees and shrubs for structure, bedding plants for drama and then very importantly, perennials - for ongoing, ever-changing texture, form and colour through the seasons. Integrating trees, shrubs, perennials and bedding plants with careful planning is a basic recipe for a well-balanced garden.
Our advice when shopping for perennials is always to read the label carefully (or online here, click on the "specifications" tab below the image. It's always a good idea to look at the finer details for each specific variety and specimen. It's also important to note that some plants species come in both bedding plant (annual), biennial and perennial species - so do read the label. For example the species "Delphinium" refers to 250 varieties of annuals, biennials and perennial species within that species.
Most perennials we stock at Windlestone Nursery are herbaceous - which means they die down completely over winter and grow again in spring, however we do have a range of evergreen and semi-evergreen perennials too.
